EUROPE: Campaign for the Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment at the Council of Europe
CONTEXT & ISSUE
In the face of ongoing environmental challenges, civil society organisations and social movements have come together to call on the Member States of the Council of Europe to protect the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment through an additional protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights.
The scale of the harms for people living in Europe, and the importance of coming to a unified approach in interpreting and implementing the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment makes it imperative for the Council of Europe to urgently take decisive steps toward the adoption of a binding legal framework that recognizes and protects the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.

UNITED STATES: SUPPORT FOR NEW YORK'S GREEN AMENDMENT
CONTEXT
In 2021, over 70% of New York voters chose to amend the state constitution to affirm the right to clean water, clean air, and a healthy environment as fundamental rights. This is a significant step, but New York's leaders must do more to fully implement these rights.

THE ISSUE
Despite this overwhelming mandate, there have been instances where the state's actions or inactions have failed to respect these newly recognized rights. It is time for New York to lead by example in the Green Amendment Environmental Rights movement.
